Last Tuesday at the New York Auto Show, Honda revealed the latest, much anticipated details on the Civic Hatchback concept. The announcement was made via live-stream, making it available for viewing worldwide, amping up car and racing enthusiasts everywhere.

In the live-stream, Jeff Conrad, Senior Vice President & General Manager, Honda Division, presented this next chapter in the “Civic Story”. The Civic is the most ambitious endeavor of a compact class sports sedan to date. Epic Honda firsts arrive alongside this announcement, including “First Turbo-Charged Engine” for a U.S. Civic Model. But the list of exciting features doesn’t end there; the new model wouldn’t be complete without a more spacious and premium cabin, 42 miles per gallon on the highway, 0-60 miles-per-hour acceleration and an option for 6-speed manual transmission.

The Civic Hatchback has been titled, “Most Ambitious,” “Seriously Sporty” and “Seriously Green.” The Hatchback should hit dealerships later this year, completing the 10th generation Civic lineup. On Twitter, fans can’t contain their excitement for the release of the new Civic Hatchback in the U.S.

image00

The awards keep stacking up for Honda. Frank Ancona Honda is proud to announce that six Honda models were ranked as Kelley Blue Book’s Best Family Cars of 2016, claiming six of the 16 available spots. Honda is the only automaker to earn awards in each category segment, making it the most recognized brand in Kelley Blue Book’s assessment for 2016. The 2016 Honda Accord, Civic, HR-V, CR-V, Pilot and Odyssey were all highlighted in their respective categories.

Kelley Blue Book created the Best Family Cars list as a resource to make picking the right family vehicle a little less daunting. The KBB staff put all vehicle contenders through extensive tests evaluating overall family comfort, safety and value.

In a Honda press release, Jeff Conrad, senior vice president and general manager of sales of the Honda Division, said, “This recognition by the experts at Kelley Blue Book of six of our core models is affirmation that Honda has the best possible choices for families of any size.”

Show Your Honda Some Love: How to Get Your Vehicle Ready for Spring

image00

The winter season can put your car through quite a beating. Spring is the perfect time to wash away all of winter’s residue and to give your Honda the TLC it deserves. Follow this simple spring car maintenance checklist from Angie’s List to make sure your vehicle is running smoothly:

  • Remove leftover salt: The salt winter road crews use to melt ice and snow can cause some serious damage to your car if you’re not careful. Make sure to pay close attention to the undercarriage where metal is prone to rusting. Give your car a good wash to eliminate the salt.
  • Check alignment and suspension: Running over potholes can cause some problems with your car’s alignment and suspension. Your car could be out of alignment if you notice your car pulling to one side or that the steering wheel vibrates as you drive.
  • Change oil and check fluids: When was the last time your car had an oil change? It’s recommended to change your car’s oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Spring is also the ideal time to flush your transmission fluid, and to check your brake and cooling system fluids.
  • Inspect tires: Worn down tires make it hard to stop, even if your brakes are in good condition. According to CBS News, you should try the coin test on your tires to test the tread. Insert a quarter into several grooves around the tire. If part of Washington’s head is always covered, you can still drive safely. If you have less tread, it’s time to start thinking about tire replacements. It’s also recommended to have your tires rotated every 5,000 miles to try to keep the tread wear even.
  • Inspect brakes: Winter conditions and road salt can lead to some corrosion on your brake parts. It’s important to have a technician check the pads and rotors to ensure they don’t pose a safety issue while out on the road. A check-up today could keep you from an expensive repair later.

Getting a spring tune-up for your car could prevent you from having a summer breakdown. Bring your car into our service department for a check-up today. Stop in or call (855) 859-6511 to schedule an appointment.

2016 Honda Civic Wins North American Car of the Year Award

image00

The all-new 2016 Honda Civic made its debut in November 2015 with a completely revamped look, jam-packed with new Honda technologies. Since its release, the vehicle has been winning tons of awards, including being one of Kelley Blue Book’s Overall Best Buys in its Best Buy Awards. Now, the new 2016 model has just earned the most prestigious award in the automotive industry: the 2016 North American Car of the Year Award.

The all-new 2016 Honda Civic received the award at the opening ceremony of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2016.

In a Honda press release, Jeff Conrad, Honda Division senior vice president and general manager, said, “The all-new Civic was developed and is built in North America, making this North American Car of the Year win even sweeter. Civic is a cornerstone of the Honda lineup, and we’re delighted and the automotive press has recognized the new levels of styling, performance, advanced technology, safety and value that characterize the new Civic.”

The North American Car of the Year Award is given by a group of 53 international automotive journalists and recognizes the most outstanding car of the year based on factors such as innovation, design, safety, performance, technology and more. This award is unique because it is given from automotive journalists from the United States and Canada.

The 2016 Honda Civic can also add a top safety pick from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety to its list of achievements. The new model has received the highest available safety rating as well as a top rating of GOOD in five IIHS crash test modes.

Conrad said, “As these new safety ratings demonstrate, the 2016 Civic Sedan not only brings new value to the compact segment with its hefty upgrades to fun-to-drive performance, fuel efficiency, refinement and technology, it also delivers advanced collision safety performance. With its available Honda Sensing technologies, including our first application of Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow, the new Civic Sedan offers customers a suite of technologies unlike anything else in the class.”

2016 Honda CR-V Receives Top Safety Pick and Highest Overall Score for Collision Safety

image00

The 2016 Honda CR-V joins the Honda Pilot, Accord and Accord Coupe in achieving a 5-star overall vehicle safety score, the top score available in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).

In a press release from Honda, Jeff Conrad, senior vice president and general manager of the Honda Division, said, “Consumers have made the CR-V America’s best-selling SUV for good reason, and this top government safety rating just adds one more appealing and class-leading attribute. Honda is committed to offering vehicles that deliver advanced safety, fun-to-drive performance and connectivity, with top fuel economy ratings. The CR-V is that kind of vehicle.”

Earlier last year the 2016 Honda CR-V also earned a top safety pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), making it a collision safety leader and a standout choice in the SUV market. It was also named Kelley Blue Book’s best small SUV buy of 2016 and one of the 15 best family cars of 2015.

The CR-V was the first Honda vehicle to offer the Honda Sensing suite of safety and driver assisted technologies. Honda Sensing is now available for the Civic, Accord, CR-V and Pilot. The new suite of driver-assisted technologies can help you sense things you might miss while driving. The suite includes:

  • Forward Collision Warning: FCW uses a small camera mounted at the top of the front windshield to detect the presence of vehicles in front of you. If it determines that you are at risk for a collision with a detected vehicle, it activates audio and visual alerts to warn you. If you fail to act on the warnings, the Collision Mitigation Braking System kicks in.
  • Collision Mitigation Braking System: By utilizing a wave radar sensor, the CMBS can help bring your Honda to a stop when the system determines that a collision with a vehicle in front of you is unavoidable. A warning sounds and then, if necessary, brake pressure is automatically applied.
  • Lane Keeping Assist System: Helps you stay in your lane by automatically adjusting the steering wheel if you begin to leave the center of a detected lane.
  • Lane Departure Warning: Alerts you if you drift out of a detected lane without using your turn signal.

What’s new in the 2016 Honda CR-V?*

Other than improvements to the Honda Sensing suite technologies, the 2016 Honda CR-V has received other new technology features including:

  • Power Tailgate: With the press of a button, the new CR-V can automatically lower or raise the trunk tailgate for easier hands-free access.
  • One-Touch Power Moonroof: With one touch of the button, you’ll be stargazing in no time.
  • Push Button Start: Now starting your CR-V is literally as easy as pressing a button.
  • Multi-Angle Rearview Camera: Get a better view of what’s behind you with three different viewing angles: normal, top-down and wide.
  • Available Real Time All Wheel Drive: It can sense when traction is lost and automatically transfer power to the rear wheels to help you grip the road and stay on course.

The above features, combined with the improved Honda Sensing suite, make the 2016 Honda CR-V one of the safest SUVs out on the market. Stop in for a test drive today or call (855) 859-6511.

Frank Ancona Honda Awaits the Debut of the New 2017 Honda Ridgeline

image00

Honda will unveil the all-new 2017 Ridgeline pickup at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on January 11, 2016, replacing the award-winning first-generation Ridgeline that has been on the market since 2005.

According to Honda’s website, when the Ridgeline was introduced, it redefined pickups by blurring the lines between full size versatility and compact practicality. The new 2017 model will further improve on the space, comfort and utility that made the original model one of the most forward-thinking vehicles in its class.

Following the 2017 Ridgeline’s world debut at the Detroit Auto Show, the all-new model will make its television debut during a 60-second TV spot during the 3rd quarter of Super Bowl 50.

In a Honda press release, Jeff Conrad, senior vice president and general manager of the Honda Automobile Division, said, “The big game is the largest and most coveted stage to show the truck. Super Bowl 50 is the right time and the right venue to communicate Honda’s continued leadership in light trucks. The multi-platform approach will enable Ridgeline to come out of the gate strong in 2016.”

The new 2017 Ridgeline is set to launch at Honda dealerships nationwide within the first half of 2016, joining Honda’s expanded lineup of innovative light truck models, including the HR-V crossover, the CR-V, Pilot and the Odyssey minivan.

In an article posted on Autoweek, Conrad said, “We developed this new Honda Ridgeline to offer something new and fundamentally better suited to the way many buyers use their truck. Ridgeline will deliver everything you’d expect in a Honda from incredible packaging and fuel-efficiency to top safety technologies and innovative, segment-first features. We’re honored to once again debut the Ridgeline in Detroit at the North American International Auto Show.”

The 2016 Honda Pilot is the Safest SUV on the Market

image02

The 2016 Honda Pilot was released earlier this year and has already received numerous awards and reviews for its safe driving technology. The 2016 model features a few design changes and “Honda-Sensing,” which is a set of driver-aid technology advancements, making it the best SUV out on the market.

In a press release from Honda, Jeff Conrad, Honda division senior vice president and general manager said, “With the addition of advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies available through Honda Sensing, no other midsize mainstream SUV on the market today can match the Pilot’s top IIHS and NHTSA safety scores.”

This past August, the 2016 Pilot received a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS). The IIHS is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing the losses – deaths, injuries and property damage – from crashes on the nation’s roads. The Pilot aced IHHS’ collision test and earned a superior rating for its front crash prevention system.

Watch the 2016 Honda Pilot in its IIHS crash test video.

The 2016 Honda Pilot also recently received a maximum 5-Star Safety Rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in its New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). The NCAP created the 5-Star Safety Ratings Program to provide information about the crash protection and rollover safety of new vehicles beyond what is required by Federal law. The more stars in a rating means the safer the car. See the full rating here.

What’s new with the 2016 Honda Pilot?*

  • Multi-Angle Rearview Camera: Now you have a better view when backing out of tight spaces. The new camera has three different angles: normal, top-down and wide.
  • Forward Collision Warning: You will be immediately alerted if the Pilot senses you are at risk of a collision with a vehicle in front of you.
  • Lane Keeping Assist System: If you start drifting out of your lane without signaling, the steering automatically adjusts to keep you centered.
  • Honda LaneWatch: When you engage the right turn signal a small camera on the right-view mirror will display live video on the middle console display. You’ll be able to switch lanes more carefully.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control: This feature will help you maintain a constant following interval so you don’t have to brake and change speeds manually.
  • Collision Mitigation Braking System: It will help bring the Pilot to a stop when it senses an unavoidable collision with a vehicle in front of you.

Frank Ancona Honda is now an Official Sponsor of U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program

Screen Shot 2015-11-30 at 9.40.18 AM

Children are our nation’s biggest resource. Today’s children make up our future leaders, but according to the National Center for Children in Poverty, more than 16 million children in the United States live below the federal poverty level, accounting for 22 percent of all children. Poverty is one of the biggest threats to a child’s well-being, causing poor general and mental health. It also affects the child’s ability to learn and leads to low self-esteem.

The federal poverty level for a family of four in the United States is $23,550 a year; however, research has shown that families need an income of about twice as much to cover basic expenses. This means about 45 percent of all children live in low-income families. With close to half the population of children living close to poverty levels, the holiday season can bring sadness and stress. By having just enough income to cover basic expenses, families often have to go without toys during the holiday season.

This is why Frank Ancona Honda is happy to be a local sponsor of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program. The Toys for Tots program aims to collect and distribute new, unwrapped toys to children in need during the holiday season. The program wants to deliver a message of hope to those less fortunate and encourage them to become responsible, productive and patriotic citizens.

Help spread the message of hope this holiday season by bringing in new toys to our store. Together we can help spread holiday cheer to those less fortunate. Bring in a toy today to our store located at 1000 N. Rogers Rd in Olathe, Kan. We will accept toy donations now through December 16, 2015. You can also give a monetary donation to the Toys for Tots program on its website.

The 2016 Honda Civic: 10 Years in the Making

Screen Shot 2015-11-16 at 10.42.10 AM

The highly anticipated 2016 Honda Civic was recently released on November 12, 2015. The 10th generation Civic debuted with a revamped look jam-packed with new Honda features. We aren’t the only one’s taking notice. Kelley Blue Book recently announced the 2016 Honda Civic as the Overall Best Buy in its Best Buy Awards. Frank Ancona Honda Featured in Kansas City Star for Support to Great Plains SPCA

greatplains

Frank Ancona Honda was the front page story in the Saturday edition of Kansas City Star’s Drive section. Thank you to David Boyce for writing an excellent article. The article put Frank Ancona Honda’s recent participation in the Great Plains SPCA’s donation campaign for much-needed funds in the spotlight. At Frank Ancona Honda, we believe in giving back to great causes and donate regularly to charities across the Kansas City metro.

This past September and October, Frank Ancona Honda supported Great Plains SPCA in its donation campaign to raise $500,000 as a way to honor Sheila Ancona, late wife of Founder Frank Ancona. Sheila was an avid supporter of animal welfare and donated frequently to various animal shelters throughout Kansas City. She passed away in August 2014, after a long battle with cancer.

As a way to continue Sheila’s legacy, Frank Ancona Honda joined RAZ Mobile and other local Kansas City area businesses in an effort to help Great Plains SPCA raise its crucial funding. The campaign was a huge success and exceeded the fundraising goal. All money raised during the donation campaign will provide more resources to place animals in homes.

Great Plains SPCA is a no-kill animal shelter located in the Kansas City Metro area serving 35,000 pets annually. It collaborates with other animal welfare agencies in the area to promote adoption, outreach, vet care and an overall better life for pets in Kansas City.

Olathe Honda Dealer Announces Winterization Tips and Service Offer

Is your Honda ready for winter? The winter months can take a toll on your car if you don’t take the necessary precautions. Being proactive can help save you from preventable, expensive repairs down the road. According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention every fall you should complete the following on your vehicle:

  1. Have your radiator serviced or check the antifreeze level yourself with an antifreeze tester and then add antifreeze as needed.
  2. Replace your windshield-wiper fluid with a wintertime mixture.
  3. Replace any worn tires making sure each tire has good air pressure and tread.

Other tips for the winter months to ensure your car always starts and that you are never left stranded, include keeping your fuel tank at least half full at all times. This prevents condensation from forming in your gas lines, which could cause your engine to run poorly and also puts your vehicle at risk for freezing of its fuel lines. Colder temperatures can also affect your tire pressure, so be sure to check your tires every time you drive.

If for some reason your vehicle would end up stalling in the cold months, be prepared. The DMV recommends that if you don’t already have an emergency kit in your car, consider putting together a few necessities. Here is a list of items to include in your winter emergency kit:

  • Shovel
  • Blankets
  • Ice Scraper
  • Jumper Cables
  • Water
  • Extra mittens and coats
  • Road salt or sand
  • Flashlight with extra batteries

To help you get ready for the coming winter months, we are happy to offer a winterization service special. The Frank Ancona Honda Winterization Package includes an oil change, battery test, multi-point inspection, tire rotation and windshield wiper replacements all for just $79.95 or $89.95 depending on oil type. Frank Ancona Honda is also offering a manager special of 10 percent off any service. You can drive away with your Honda ready to take on the tough winter months. Don’t wait for disaster to strike; bring your Honda to our factory-trained technicians today. Call (913) 782-3636 to schedule an appointment.

honda owners event sept 2015

Since these owners are new to Frank Ancona Honda, the workshop event introduced the different services and conveniences the dealership offers to owners to keep their vehicle in top condition. After enjoying a complimentary dinner, new owners got to meet the service technicians who work at Frank Ancona Honda.

The owners got a tour of the service waiting area. To keep owners comfortable while they are waiting for their vehicle to be serviced, the waiting area offers a variety of seating and complimentary soft drinks and juice, a full coffee bar, fruit, donuts and cookies. Free Wi-Fi is available in the waiting area as well as a few computers for waiting customers to use. There is also a child play area with plenty of toys and activities. Owners can see their car being serviced with the full glass wall into the service bay.

After the service area tour, the technicians brought the new owners into the service bay where a variety of Honda vehicles were waiting for the owners to explore. The technicians answered any questions owners had about their new vehicles and then asked owners to go to the vehicle model in the bay they currently own. The technicians walked them through the vehicle, talking about what is under the hood and the various service benchmarks they should be aware of. The technicians also offered advice, such as how to change a tire and how certain cool features in the vehicle work.

The next Honda Owners Event will be held March 16, 2016.

2016 Honda Pilot and Honda Odyssey Earn Top Safety Picks

The 2016 Honda Pilot and the 2016 Honda Odyssey have earned top safety pick awards. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the 2016 Honda Pilot an IIHS Top Safety Pick+. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded the 2016 Honda Odyssey a five star overall safety rating.

honda pilot odyssey top safety picks

After completely redesigning the Honda Pilot for the 2016 model year, many of the safety features were upgraded causing the bump in the safety rating from the IIHS. In order to win a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, the vehicle needs a good or acceptable small overlap rating and good ratings in the four other tests, including moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints, along with a front crash prevention system to qualify for the advanced + rating.

During the IIHS testing, the 2016 Pilot performed well with these results from Automotive World:

  • Maximum intrusion of 4 inches at the parking brake pedal.
  • Well-controlled dummy movement.
  • Front and side curtain airbags kept dummy in place and protected the head from contact with the car and outside objects.
  • Low risk of any significant injuries in a severe crash.

The NHTSA awarded the 2016 Honda Odyssey with a five star overall safety rating, the highest safety rating available from the federal government. When testing was performed by the NHTSA, the Odyssey received five stars in the front and side crash tests and four stars in the rollover test. The 2016 Odyssey has many standard safety features that helped achieve this rating, including:

  • Vehicle stability assist with traction control
  • Brake assist
  • Antilock brakes
  • Rearview camera

In the upgraded trim levels, including the EX-L, Touring and Elite models, the Odyssey has additional standard safety features:

  • Forward-collision warning
  • Lane-departure warning

New Tech Offerings for the 2016 Honda Accord

The 2015 Honda Accord was the highest performing model year in the company’s history, meaning Honda had a tough act to follow for the 2016 year. But the company didn’t disappoint with the technology in the 2016 Honda Accord.

Without a doubt, the coolest new feature of the 2016 Honda Accord is the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay tech integrations that will be standard in all Accord vehicles. The Android and Apple car tech will allow the dashboard touchscreen interface to look just like the homepage of your phone. Drivers can navigate through their phone menus through voice commands or with buttons on the steering wheel.

Part of what is so innovative about offering these technologies is the Accord is the first vehicle to come to market with the tech as opposed to other manufacturers who offer the tech on the side. Also, the Accord is the first vehicle to offer both Android and Apple smartphone interfaces according to Fortune. The tech being offered to market as the interface reduced the risks of distracted driving. Even with all the car tech integrations offered today, people still turn to their phones for in-car navigation. Honda is hoping offering this tech at the start will push more people to use their car to use their phone and reduce accidents from looking down at a phone screen.

In addition to integrating Apple and Android interface technology, Honda is going further with tech safety by offering Honda Sensing in new Accords. This safety technology has already been offered in new CR-V and Pilot models. According to Automotive News, Honda went to Silicon Valley to research what people were looking for in car tech and the answer was complete integration.

3 Child Car Safety Tips from Frank Ancona Honda

Frank Ancona Honda is all about family safety, especially when it comes to children and cars. As a sponsor of Baby Love, KC’s Only Baby Fair, the dealership is spreading awareness about child car safety and how to prevent injury to kids around vehicles. Here are three child car safety tips to keep your family happy and secure for the ride.

Car Seat Safety

babylovetip1

babylovetip6

babylovetip

Car seats are the first place to start when thinking about car seat safety. Many new parents typically think car seats are only necessary when they are young, but children should have some type of car or booster seat until they are 8-12 years old or taller than 4’9”, according to Healthy Children. After that, children should have a lap and shoulder seat belt at all times and always sit in the back seat to reduce injury in a car accident.

Otherwise, infants and toddlers should remain in rear-facing car seats until they are two years old or until they pass the height and weight requirements from the manufacturer. Toddlers and preschoolers should remain in forward-facing car seats as long as possible, usually until height and weight requirements are exceeded.

Heatstroke

babylovetip5

Leaving kids in the car, either accidentally or to quickly run into a store, can cause heat stroke incredibly quickly. Edmunds reports that heatstroke and suffocation can occur even when it is as cool as 70 degrees outside. Always leave a reminder for yourself in the front seat that your child is buckled up in the back and never leave them in the car by themselves, even if you are quickly running into a store.

Frontover & Backover

babylovetip3

babylovetip4

The statistics on frontover and backover are incredibly alarming, as evidenced in the infographic below with information from KidsAndCars.org. There is eight feet of blind spot space in front of the vehicle and 50 feet in the back. It is important to always do a walkaround of your vehicle before driving. Also, use backup cameras to ensure the path behind you is clear.

To learn more about child car safety, attend the Kansas City Baby Fair on August 2 at the Overland Park Convention Center! Tickets are $7 if you get them ahead of the event and $10 at the door.

Frank Ancona Honda Announces Sponsorship for Baby Love Kansas City

Frank Ancona Honda is proud to be one of the first sponsors for Baby Love, Kansas City’s Only Baby Fair! The event will be August 2, 2015 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Overland Park Convention Center. This is the fair’s first time in KC, but they have been hosting the event in Omaha for nine years. Baby Love is full of amazing resources and information for moms-to-be and families. Tickets are $7 if you get them ahead of the event and $10 at the door.

FAHChildCarSafetyBabyLove

Frank Ancona Honda will be focusing on family car safety at the fair and have vehicles on display for live demonstrations. There are many dangers in and around a vehicle that many families don’t think about. Frank Ancona Honda is happy to participate in Baby Love to give parents a chance to see what the dangers are and learn how to keep their children safe.

Many parents understand the importance of car seats and keeping kids in the back seat until they are 12 or older. There are differences between the types of car seats needed depending on the age of your child. HealthyChildren.org has a guide for car seats based on child’s age. Likewise, many parents do not know they need to keep their children in a booster seat until they are around that 12 year old age.

There have been many incidents in the news the past few years of parents forgetting to get their child out of the car and leaving them locked in with the windows up. The greatest danger this presents temperature. Even on a cloudy, 70 degree day, children can suffer heatstroke and suffocation in a closed up vehicle. Other dangers include children playing with power windows, which can cause serious injury or death in some cases, and children putting the vehicle in motion to cause injury in an accident. The key to be safe here is to leave a reminder in the car that your child is there, such as a teddy bear in the front seat as suggested by Edmunds. There are many child safety apps that will send you a reminder to check the back seat once your car bluetooth is disconnected as well.

Unfortunately, a common child car danger is backover and frontover. According to KidsAndCars.org, 50 children are backed over every week and 70 percent of the time it is a parent or close relative behind the wheel. The average age of victims is one year old and 60 percent of these incidents occur in a larger vehicle, such as a truck or SUV. Always do a walkaround of the vehicle before leaving and use your backup camera to make sure your path is clear.

These Are a Few of Our Favorite Things About the Honda HR-V

The all-new Honda HR-V is an innovation in the crossover market. Many car reviewers are calling the HR-V the hottest little SUV of the summer and great reviews are piling up. Other automotive companies are working fast to create their own versions of the HR-V in hopes the popularity will rub off on them. In light of this, Frank Ancona Honda wanted to share some of our favorite things about everybody’s favorite little crossover, the Honda HR-V.

A Small CUV With a Lot of Space

The Honda HR-V is unique in the crossover market because of its size. The crossover is already the mid-size option between a car and an SUV, but the HR-V is another smaller option in crossover size range. But not to fear – the HR-V does not feel tiny! The HR-V was modeled on the Honda Fit chassis, a car known for making incredible use of the space. This may be the biggest wow factor of the new CUV. The space in the small vehicle is incredible. There is 58.8 cubic feet of storage with three interior configurations and seating for five passengers.

Excellent Gas Mileage Without Sacrificing Performance

The Honda HR-V receives an average of 35 mpg highway and 28 mpg city driving. According to USA Today’s test drive, they drove the HR-V without any regard for fuel efficiency and still averaged 30 mpg range. Consumers also have the option of manual or continuously variable-ratio automatic transmission (CVT).

A Clever Interior

Not only is the interior clever because of the use of space, but the interior features work with the driver and passengers, not against them. The cup holders are adjustable, there are plenty of connectivity options for various devices, backup camera is standard and the in-car tech is made to make life easier.

A Mini-SUV Without the Cost

Many people opt for larger cars instead of SUVs because of the price difference. Honda decided to solve that problem by offering the LX base model starting at $19,115 MSRP. Offering an SUV option for under $20,000 means more consumers who want to get into a vehicle with more space and power now have the option. Besides that, the HR-V gives consumers the option to get a fully loaded option for thousands less than competitor vehicles fully loaded, as Jalopnik covers in-depth.

What to Expect from the 2016 Honda Pilot

Just in time for your summer family road trip, the 2016 Honda Pilot is designed with the family in mind. The Pilot’s size is between the smaller CR-V and the larger family-of-five Odyssey, outfitted with all of the features a family that is constantly on the go needs. The Pilot’s design has been upgraded in response to drivers’ desires from the 2014 and 2015 models, providing a custom family hauler vehicle for the modern family with the classic Honda performance under the hood.

The Pilot feels like an all-new vehicle with sleeker, rounder edges compared to the boxy design of the 2015, taking design cues from the popular CR-V. Despite the 3.5 inch increase in length and 1.8 inch increase in wheelbase, the Pilot is lighter by 286 pounds thanks to the upgraded design. The 2016 model makes use of its space, offering more cargo room behind the third row than most other SUV’s in the market. For extra storage, the 2016 Pilot also has a new under-floor compartment with a lid for convenient storage. Total, the Pilot offers 109.2 cubic feet of storage space with seating for up to eight passengers

The 3.5 liter V6 engine provides 280 horsepower with 262 lb-ft of torque, an upgrade in power from the 2014 thanks to the new direct-injected engine. The transmission is now a six-speed automatic in the first three trim levels with the ZF nine-speed transmission in the Touring and Elite trims. With more power than before, the Pilot still manages excellent fuel economy for its size, offering 27 mpg highway and 19 mpg city driving.

As for features, the Pilot comes in five trim levels. The LX is the entry level model, moving up to the EX, EX-L, Touring and Elite trims. The LX’s features are pretty basic to keep the price point down, but starting with the EX the features get interesting. Apart from the LX, there are at least three USB ports and Lane Watch side-view camera standard. On all models, backup camera is standard. The Honda Sensing safety suite is available on all models except the LX, offering road and lane departure warnings, forward collision warning and braking and adaptive cruise control.

All-in-all, the Pilot is ready for a family to slap on their kids’ sports affiliations and their stick figure family stickers before they hop in for a summer road trip.

Vintage Honda: The T360 and S500

Honda has a unique history compared to other automotive brands. Honda started out as a motorcycle company after WWII in Japan and quickly became an engine innovator. In fact, the first few vehicles from Honda all had motorcycle engines under the hood! Frank Ancona Honda wants to showcase the vintage Honda and take a look at the first two production vehicles – the T360 and S500.

Honda T360

rsz_img_0026

Before there was the Honda Ridgeline, the T360 was the Honda pickup truck of the day. The T360 was the first production vehicle ever from Honda, introduced in 1963. It stayed in production until 1967 and 108,920 were made. The T360 had a small 356-cc straight-4 gasoline engine which was also found in the Honda S360 roadster prototype that never made it to production. Top speed was 62 mph with this engine, producing 30 hp at 8,500 rpm.

The T360 is a very small pickup because of Kei regulations. Kei allowed the T360 to be in a lower tax bracket, so Honda followed regulations that restricted the size of the truck. There were no color choices – people who bought the T360 could only purchase the “May Blue” color.

The T360 was a rear wheel drive pickup and was offered in three different styles. The T360F was a flatbed, the T360H was a flatbed with folding sides and the T360V was a covered van. A rare version of the T360 is called the Snow Crawler which had tracked propulsion units in the back. it was a useful car for Japanese climate and terrain, but its price tag was hefty, so they were only seen in certain areas of northern Japan.

The T360 was the start of the Honda automobile line and its pickup popularity spurred the T500, a similar pickup truck that was slightly larger in many ways. The T500 had a 38 hp 531 cc version of the T360 engine with a top speed of 65 mph delivering 7,500 rpm with a redline at 9,000 rpm. The T500 was also 20 centimeters longer than the T360. Instead of “May Blue,” the T500 trucks were all painted “Moss Green.”

Honda S500

rsz_img_0027

The Honda S500 is the second automobile to be put into production and is also the first sports car that Honda produced. A sports car was a natural option for Honda’s new automobile line since they started as a motorcycle company. The S500 has chain-driven rear wheels and four-speed manual transmission point heavily to Honda’s background and expertise in motorcycles.

The engine was another high-tech motorcycle engine with a dual overhead cam straight-4 with four carburettors. The engine is a 531 cc and produced 44 hp at 8000 rpm and a redline of 9,500 rpm. The S500 engine was meant to displace the 492 cc that was supposed to be in the S360 that never reached production. The S500 was a mere 1500 lb and could reach a top speed of 80 mph.

Honda innovated with the S500 and impressed with the four-wheel independent suspension, front torsion bars and rear diagonal coilover shock absorbers. The S500 was so unique that many competitors raced to get their own version of the sports car, including Toyota.

The S500 was released four months after the T360 in 1963 but was only in production for one year. 1,363 Honda S500 were produced, making the sports car a complete rarity. In 1963, the S500 cost $1,275 and also came with a hardtop version that was slightly pricier.

Summer Car Maintenance Tips Before Your Road Trip

Summer is finally here and many people are busy planning their fun-filled road trip across the country. There is a lot to do before your wheels hit the open road, but make sure prepping your car for summer travel is on the top of your priority list. A fun summer road trip can end really fast if a vehicle hasn’t had proper maintenance for the hot roads and long distances. Here are some summer car maintenance tips to make sure your trip includes a flawless drive.

Make Sure Your AC Works

While the AC doesn’t have a whole lot to do with safety, sitting in a hot car for miles of a road trip is extremely uncomfortable. It may give you childhood flashbacks to your parents old beat up car before AC was standard in vehicles, but that doesn’t mean your family has to suffer through it! Test the AC while driving to work or running errands around town to ensure it blows cold the entire time. If not, it is time to get your AC recharged.

Check Headlights, Turn Signals and Windshield Wipers

Many people don’t think to check the miscellaneous functions on their vehicle before a road trip. Having a headlight or taillight out can result in poor visibility and possibly a ticket. Turn signals should be in working order to stay safe while driving. While you don’t want a downpour on your road trip, rain could happen so your windshield wipers should be in top working order. Consider applying RainX to your windshield for extra rain protection.

Fix Your Tires

There are a lot of miles on your road trip and every one affects your tires. Start your tires out right at the beginning to avoid problems down the road. Make sure your treads are deep enough for proper traction. You also want to adjust your tire pressure for summer driving. Tires should deflated because summer weather increases the tire pressure one pound per every 10 degrees.

Refill Fluids

Gas is not the only fluid you need to worry about on a road trip. Make sure your transmission fluid, antifreeze, radiator coolant, engine oil, brake fluid and windshield wiper fluid are at the optimum levels before going on your road trip.

Double Check Towing Capacity

Before you hook on a boat or camper or load your vehicle down with suitcases, double check your manufacturer’s guidelines on weight limits and towing capacity. If you are towing something behind the vehicle, check the trailer’s tires and brake lights while you’re at it.

Check Your Brakes

Chances are you are going to have plenty of opportunities to test out the responsiveness of your brakes on your road trip! People will stop unexpectedly to find their turn or you might encounter some daring wildlife crossing the highway. Your brakes should be dependable so you can avoid these dangers without damaging your vehicle or the people in it. Bring your vehicle in to be services so a thorough brake inspection can be conducted.

Start Your Engines, The New Honda HR-V is at Frank Ancona Honda

It is finally here! After months of anticipation, the all-new Honda HR-V is at home in the dealership at Frank Ancona Honda. The new crossover is being called the Honda CR-V’s younger brother, smaller than the CR-V but with more space and offerings than a car.

When Honda released the Fit, the goal was to offer a compact car that was not so compact. Everyone marveled at the space and comfort the Fit provided, along with the performance. Honda took the same ideas as the Fit and applied it to the growing crossover market, targeting people who were interested in a crossover but who were having trouble making the move from their car to a larger vehicle.

The Honda HR-V pieces together the best parts of other vehicles in the Honda line-up. Like we already said, it utilizes space incredibly well for a smaller crossover, taking its cues from the Fit. It has AWD which the CR-V made famous and the engine from the popular Civic. In addition, the Honda HR-V is the first car in the lineup to start out offering the continuously variable transmission (CVT), a feature that is becoming standard on all Honda vehicles. This transmission means you do not feel the vehicle shift gears, creating a smooth and seamless driving experience.

Let’s get into the nitty gritty specs of the HR-V. The Honda HR-V boasts 35 mpg highway driving and 28 mpg city for a combined 31 mpg with the option of turning on the Eco Assist system for an even better gas mileage rating. The HR-V is powered by a 141 horsepower, 1.8 liter 4 cylinder engine with 127 lb-ft of torque.

To make the smaller crossover feel especially large, the HR-V seems to use magic to provide 58.8 cubic feet of cargo space. There are three storage modes to allow you to utilize the space however you need. Utility Mode showcases the famous Honda magic seats that fold all the way down. Long Mode allows the passenger front and rear seats to fold down to fit longer items into the HR-V. Tall Mode allows you to get an extra four feet of vertical space by folding the rear seats up.

There are three trim levels available for the Honda HR-V – the LX, EX and EX-L. The basic LX comes standard with multi-angle rearview camera, second row magic seats, a five inch color LCD screen, Bluetooth handsfree and audio streaming, USB audio, remote entry, 17 inch alloy wheels and LED brake lights. Upgrades in the other trim levels include HondaLink Next Generation, Honda LaneWatch, Pandora radio, push button start, smart entry, powered moonroof, heated front seats, leather interior, Honda Satellite navigation with voice recognition, SiriusXM radio, HD radio and roof rails.

The Honda HR-V is completely customizable. You can explore more about the Honda HR-V on the Honda website or you can stop into Frank Ancona Honda for a test drive to see the features for yourself.

The Honda Accord Hybrid Lands on KBB’s 10 Best Green Cars List

The 2015 Honda Accord Hybrid has landed on Kelley Blue Book’s 10 Best Green Cars List for the second year in a row. The Accord made it onto the list for the incredible fuel economy the vehicle boasts, beating out the Chevy Volt and Tesla, along with how well the Honda Accord holds its value.

The Honda Accord has always been designed with fuel efficiency in mind, but the 2015 models beat out all previous fuel economy standings the vehicle had. Currently the Accord Hybrid sees EPA fuel economy ratings of 50 mpg highway, 45 mpg city and 47 mpg combined.

The Accord Hybrid features two motor hybrid system, blending electric-only, hybrid and engine drive models. The official name for this system is Two-Motor Hybrid Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD). This technology that is part of the Honda EarthDreams powertrain lineup. This is the most thermally efficient engine in production currently for any car brand.

The Accord Hybrid also features highly responsive and powerful regenerative braking the improves the fuel performance. Along with regenerative braking to help improve fuel economy, the Accord Hybrid incorporates start/stop technology and the air conditioner, power steering and water pump are electrically operated.

The Accord Hybrid starts off as all electric when you first turn it on. If you stay in a city-driving speed limit, it will run on electric-only for about thirteen miles. This distance is so short because the battery doesn’t have the same energy storage as a plug-in model. After all-electric is used up, a generator kicks on to provide on-board electric propulsion.

Keeping the engine below 43 mph keeps the Accord in this hybrid mode, meaning there is no mechanical connection between the drive wheels and the engine. However, going faster than 43 turns the engine on. Going 60 mph or faster shifts the engine to gas-only.

Even without the first class fuel economy that the Accord Hybrid has been recognized for, the vehicle provides an incredible driving experience that some car reviews have called futuristic. Driving a Honda Accord Hybrid is absolutely seamless – drivers do not feel gears shift or hear that gasoline exhaust noise. This is because the i-MMD doesn’t have any belts, pulleys, drive clutch or torque converter to create such a seamless experience. Even without these nuances we are all used to, the Accord generates an impressive 141 horsepower for a hybrid.

New Honda Family of Powertrains Revealed in Japan

Last week, Honda unveiled the Step WGN at the Japan Auto Show. While we will not be seeing this vehicle in North America, this reveal also showcases the all-new Honda family of powertrains ready to be released. Honda first announced the new family of powertrains back in January, but the Step WGN gives us a chance to see them up close.

The Step WGN features the 1.5-liter direct-injected VTEC Turbo four-cylinder engine, producing 148 HP at 5,500 RPM and 150lb of torque between 1,600 and 5,000 RPM. The new CVT was developed specifically for the 1.5-liter VTEC Turbo engine.

The only other vehicle that we know will have one of the new powertrain family is in the next-gen Honda Civic. The engine will be the same 1.5-liter VTEC Turbo with the horsepower of a 2.4-liter engine with better torque and fuel economy.

The new Honda Civic Type-R will have a higher power engine – a 2.0-liter VTEC Turbo producing 310 HP at 2500 RPM and 295lb of torque. This engine allows the Type R to go from 0 to 62 MPH in 5.7 seconds with an outstanding top speed of 167 MPH.

The new powertrain family is part of the Earth Dreams Technology lineup. The engines will not only deliver better performance and power, but they will also see an amazing fuel efficiency. Even the “racecar for the road” Type-R is expected to get better fuel economy than competitors with the new VTEC Turbo engine.

In addition to the engines, Honda is releasing all-new fuel-cell vehicles to continue their goal of creating low-carbon technologies by 2018. These vehicles include the plug-in hybrid model called PHEV and the battery-electric vehicle called BEV.

The new four cylinder VTEC Turbo engines will be produced at the Ohio Honda plant. Honda has already invested $340 million into the plant for the production of this new powertrain family and are adding a third assembly line for the engines and other manufacturing. The various engines in the family will be introduced by the end of this year in various Honda vehicles, some in North America and some in other areas around the globe.

Fuel Economy Tips for Earth Day

Happy Earth Day! Today is a day to spread awareness about the impact our actions can have on the environment. Driving our cars is one of them. While most Honda vehicles have excellent fuel economy on their own, our driving habits and car maintenance can significantly impact how much fuel we are using. This in turn impacts how much pollution we are causing. Here are some fuel economy tips for Earth Day that will save you money and help the environment.

Image Credit: Fabio Aro / Foter / CC By

Go the Speed Limit

Generally speaking, the optimal speed limit for the best fuel economy is 50mph. Granted you will not be able to achieve this everywhere, but observing the speed limit will prevent you from aggressive driving behaviors that can lower gas mileage by 33 percent on the highway and 5 percent in the city, according to FuelEconomy.gov.

Lighten Your Load

Hauling excess weight, especially on the roof, can reduce your fuel economy. To put it in perspective, every 100 pounds of extra weight decreases your fuel economy by 1 percent. Roof and rear cargo hauling does even more damage.

Perform Regular Maintenance

Whenever you perform regularly scheduled maintenance on your car, you can improve the life of your car’s fuel economy by 4 percent. According to FuelEconomy.gov, regular maintenance can detect major problems with your vehicle that can actually improve mileage by as much as 40 percent.

Don’t Idle and Use Cruise Control

Too much idling can greatly reduce your fuel economy per trip. If you are going to be idling for more than a few seconds, such as in a long line at a fast food restaurant, turn your car off. It only takes a few seconds a fuel to restart your engine as opposed to the fuel you burn when you are idling.

Cruise control is another great way to conserve fuel. Since cruise control allows you to maintain the same speed without human errors of fluctuation, you burn less fuel. Only use it when driving on the highway where the same speed is maintained with few interruptions, such as stoplights.

Check Your Tires

Tires that are properly inflated can improve your fuel economy by 3.3 percent. For every 1 psi drop in pressure, you can lose 0.3 percent in gas mileage. Besides great fuel economy, tires that are properly inflated are safer for everyday driving.

Next Generation Honda Civic Coupe Steals the New York Auto Show

The New York Auto Show was full of many exciting vehicles, but Honda surprised everyone by unveiling the 10th generation Honda Civic Coupe. The car caught immediate attention with the bright lime green color, but people were even more amazed by the rest of the upgrades for the new generation Civic.

This year seems to be the year of the competitive sports coupe and Honda is stepping into the ring. The Honda Civic shows that the brand is ready to do battle to create a sensible sporty vehicle. NY Daily News reports that the engine is a 1.5 liter 4 cylinder with 6 speed manual gearbox and the new standard for Honda – a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The estimates for horsepower range in the 200 mark while still offering the excellent fuel economy Honda is known for.

The frame of the vehicle also received an upgrade. The wheelbase is longer to get rid of the overhang on the front wheels. The Civic is also lower and wider than previous models, according to J.D. Power. To make the Civic look a little more athletic, Honda stretched the hood, shortened the rear deck and brought back the hatchback style. They are calling the styling on the new Civic a Flying H design.

The best part about this reveal of the next generation Honda Civic at the New York Auto Show is the sporty design and the Civic Type-R model are coming to America! The sporty Civics have a history of being Europe-only, but 2016 models are going to make their way to American showrooms, including Frank Ancona Honda!

The Future of the Honda CR-Z

The hybrid Honda CR-Z was Honda’s answer to enter the hybrid market in 2010. Yet many have complained about the performance compared to other Honda vehicles and the small fuel economy despite its hybrid status. Now Honda has a gameplan to re-introduce the Honda CR-Z to the market in by 2018 as a sportier model.

The 2017 model will feature an engine that was first debuted in the drool-worthy 2015 Civic Type-R – a turbocharged 2.0 liter four-cylinder featuring the signature VTEC variable valve timing technology, according to MotorAuthority. With the popularity of the Civic Type-R, Honda is installing this favorable engine in the CR-Z to answer complaints about the lack of power in the hybrid vehicle. Honda is also rebranding the CR-Z in 2017 with a new name, titled the Civic Coupe CR-Z.

The new CR-Z version will be unrecognizable with an upgraded body styling. Honda is positioning the CR-Z to be the next generation of the Civic sedan, but a sportier coupe version. While the current CR-Z was built on the Honda Fit chassis, the new CR-Z will be built on a shortened Civic chassis, according to Gas 2.

Honda will be focusing on other efficient vehicle models, such as the FCX Clarity and other FCV concepts, and turning the CR-Z hybrid into a gas machine once more. Since the CR-Z did not have the fuel efficiency that was expected for a hybrid, Honda is reverting the model.

Frank Ancona Honda’s Vintage Collection Featured on Edmunds.com

Back in January, Frank Ancona Honda featured its vintage collection of cars, bikes, scooters and generators that go way back in the Ancona family history. The piece fascinated Honda aficionados and this month the collection was featured on Edmunds.com. A big thank you to Edmunds for writing about us!

honda_carnews_30315_600

Rene Wisely, the correspondent from Edmunds who wrote about the collection at Frank Ancona Honda, was impressed with the dealership’s interest in the depth of Honda production history. In the article, Wisely commented, “A dealership that knows how to mine its rich history strikes an appreciative chord with consumers.”

The Edmunds feature goes more in-depth about what spurred this spark about the Honda collection. When Michael Ancona, the second generation owner of the dealership, traveled to Japan with many other second and third generation owners, he learned a great deal about the history and unique Honda culture.

The trip reminded Ancona of the family treasures in storage and wanted to bring them out for everyone to admire. He is continuing to look for more vintage Honda pieces to put on display at the dealership.

The pieces of the collection include a 1971 Honda 600 Coupe, 1975 Honda MR50 Elsinore, 1986 Honda Spree, 1983 Honda Express, Honda Kick-N-Go 2 and 1963 Honda Generators. These were either collected over the years by members of the Ancona family or won by Frank Ancona for excellent sales and customer service after opening the dealership.

Frank Ancona Honda Features S-2000 Convertible On Showroom Floor

UPDATE: The S-2000 Convertible sold in just five days after arriving on the showroom floor!

Everyone at Frank Ancona Honda is very excited to welcome the rare 2005 Honda S-2000 at the dealership! The convertible is on display on the showroom floor, making our dealership look even better than before. This rare vehicle is currently for sale at $18,995 with only 45,146 miles on it.

Honda S2000 Collage

In particular, the 2005 Honda S-2000 has extremely high customer and critic reviews. Many recall the 2005 S-2000 as being the best car they have ever owned, according to reviews on Kelley Blue Book. The entry-level convertible has a manual six-speed transmission and a four-cylinder VTEC 2.2 liter 237 horsepower engine. On average the S-2000 sees 19 MPG (17 city and 23 highway).

NADA reports the 2005 Honda S-2000 “handles like its on rails and makes the most of its high-revving 2.2L four-cylinder engine for a fun ride.” The S-2000 goes from 0 to 60 in 5.8 seconds, reaching 9,000 RPMs at a 2,750 pound curb weight at the end of the day.

Named for the 2 liter engine and modeled after the S-series roadsters of the 1960s, the Honda S-2000 was released in 1999 to celebrate Honda’s 50th anniversary. The first run was known as the AP1, but in 2004 the S-2000 got a facelift known as the AP2. The suspension was retuned for better stability in corners, the drivetrain was improved, cosmetics were changed to modernize the vehicle and the subframe was altered to improve rigidity. The engine remained the same as the AP1.

The saddest part of the S-2000’s story is it stopped being produced in 2009. Even when it was produced, only 7,000 were made each year making every model a rarity today. Throughout its lifetime, the S-2000 won many awards and accolades from performance to safety to affordability.

Come see the Honda S-2000 for yourself at Frank Ancona Honda, if it is still there once this blog post is live!

2016 Honda HR-V MPG Announced

Since the 2016 Honda HR-V was announced, snippets of details about the new crossover have been slowly released. The latest news was released last week, answering a long-questioned stat on the crossover: How many miles per gallon does the Honda HR-V get?

According to AutoGuide, the mileage for the Honda HR-V stands at:

  • 28 mpg city and 35 mpg highway with a CVT and front-wheel drive
  • 27 mpg city and 32 mpg highway with all-wheel drive
  • 25 mpg city and 34 mpg highway with six-speed manual transmission

Car enthusiasts have been waiting for these numbers to see how the Honda HR-V would rank against its two biggest competitors, the Nissan Juke and the Chevy Trax. The Trax has a very low mpg with 26 city and 34 highway front-wheel drive. The Juke is close – 28 city and 32 highway front-wheel drive – but the HR-V’s mileage cannot be beat.

Modeled after the Fit, the HR-V promises to make practical use of it’s space with what is being called by Car and Driver “magic seats” and “interior origami.” With the seats up, there is 24.3 cubic feet of cargo space. When the magical seats are down, the HR-V boasts 58.8 cubic feet of cargo space.

Under the hood, the Honda HR-V has a 1.8-liter unit with 138 horsepower and 127-lb of torque. There are three trims available – LX, EX and EX-L. Standard are power windows, mirrors and door locks; a rearview camera, Pandora radio, Bluetooth, an electronic parking brake and aluminum wheels. The higher up you go, you will see a touch screen, keyless entry, paddle shifters, push button start, heated seats, satellite radio and a navigation system with Honda Digital Traffic notifications.

Soon we will hear about the safety ratings, but it is easy to assume it will be an IIHS Top Safety Pick with a full range of airbags and Brake Assist technology.

Throwback – The Vintage Frank Ancona Honda

This blog feature is courtesy of Michael Ancona, president of Frank Ancona Honda. Thank you for sharing a little Ancona history with us!

Fun Fact: Frank Ancona has been a cars-only dealership only since 1985. They started out back in 1961 as Northeast Sport Motors, selling motorcycle various motorcycle brands including Ducati, Norton, Triumph, and of course Honda. Before Frank Ancona Honda was a car dealership, the company sold motorcycles. The dealership actually sold more vehicles than Honda and won the Top Award from Soichiro Honda in 1966. Frank Ancona traveled to Japan to receive the honor and met Mr. Honda himself.

Text Reads: “Top Award 1966 Honda Holiday in Japan Contest. Presented to Northeast Sport Motors Kansas City, Missouri in recognition of Outstanding Achievement – Soichiro Honda, President” Courtesy of Michael Ancona

In 1971 the dealership expanded into selling cars and used to have their motorcycles and cars in the same showroom off of Truman Road in Kansas City. Since 1961, the Ancona family has amassed many cool collectibles, some of which have great sentiment with the Ancona family.

1971 Honda 600 Coupe

The antique Honda 600 Coupe was bought and restored many years ago by Frank Ancona. A farmer’s wife was cleaning out the barn after her husband’s death and sold Mr. Ancona the car. When Honda first began making cars, they actually made them with motorcycle engines. You can tell the Ancona’s Honda has one because the transmission is in the dash, not the floor. There are more fun facts about the car from Michael Ancona. “They only made them in ugly colors back then,” he says, listing bright shades of orange, yellow, teal and green. This olive green Coupe only has 58,000 miles on it and is mostly original. You can see it for yourself on the dealership floor.

1975 Honda MR50 Elsinore

The Honda MR50 is a special edition mini dirt bike, only made in 1974 and 1975. Ancona’s is a 1975 model two-stroke with a 3-speed manual clutch transmission. The MR50 was modeled after its older brothers – the CR125 and CR250 Elsinores. Everything about the mini bike was the same as the larger models except for one thing. Parents could manually control how fast their little tykes went on the bike using an allen screw in one of the four throttle stops.

1986 Honda Spree

The Spree was the entry level 50cc scooter for Honda with the Aero50 as their premium offering. Sold in the US and Canada between the years of 1984 to 1987, the Honda Spree was 2-stroke engine using a belt drive instead of a multi-ratio variator. Eventually the Honda Spree was replaced with the Honda Elite E/ES. The 1986 model in the dealership is in mint condition with only eight miles on it.

1983 Honda Express

The 1983 Honda Express is a special little bike for the Ancona family. Many of the Ancona kids rode it around the KU campus back in the day, so much so that it has a whopping 440 miles on it. You can still see a KU parking pass on the rear wheel fender! The scooter was made by Honda from 1977 to 1983 and is powered by an air-cooled 49cc two stroke with an automatic transmission.

Honda Kick-N-Go 2

Precursor to the Razor scooters, the Honda Kick-N-Go 2 is now a nostalgia item for many adults who yearned for their own or put a lot of miles on theirs growing up. The first Kick-N-Go was released in 1974 aimed for children while the Kick-N-Go 2, released in 1976, was aimed for teenagers. Unlike other scooters where you kicked at the ground, the Kick-N-Go moves by kicking the pedal down and has a handbrake to slow down.

1963 Honda Generators

These Honda generators may not power a hair dryer today, Michael Ancona says, but back in 1963 it was an Award of Merit for his father Frank Ancona. Mr. Ancona won the award based on outstanding achievement and sales effort in that year. These generators were created by Honda to expand on their previous product line success by making them portable. In the 60s, this generator was ideal. It has a 300-watt output and runs on gas with a pull start. It was considered quiet and extremely compact for travel.

Frank Ancona Honda plans on putting these collectibles on display on the main floor of the dealership. Do you have any memories of these Honda classics? Let us know in the comments.

Honda Nearly Beats Yearly Sales Record; Sets Up Good Pace For 2015

Honda is one of the top selling brands in America, and several of its cars are consistently on top of their class for best-selling models in the country. So it shouldn’t come as a shock when Honda brings in the big numbers. What is shocking, though, is just how close Honda came to breaking a yearly sales record in 2014. With that kind of steam going into the New Year, there’s no telling what heights Honda will reach in 2015.

image00

According to the Dayton Daily News, Honda sold over 1.5 million vehicles in 2014, which was a one percent increase over sales in 2013. The 1.5 million sales mark is the second highest sales year in Honda history, barely under numbers sold in 2007. Acura also had its second best year of all time behind 2007 with sales of nearly 168 thousand vehicles. But the banner number came from Honda’s light truck sales with over 700 thousand sold, a complete destruction of the previous yearly record. These numbers are good news for an auto industry as a whole that saw a near collapse during the recession a few years ago.

Honda recently completed its annual Happy Honda Days campaign and has new models and vehicles debuting later in the year, which will help to continue to bolster sales. Industry leaders told the Dayton Daily News they expect vehicle sales to continue to rise in 2015 with more cars sold than in 2014, but they also predict a decline in auto sales in the next few years. Until that happens, Honda will continue riding high on its sales numbers and continue to provide Americans with the quality and service they have come to expect from Honda.

Happy Honda Days Is Back To Bring You Holiday Discounts At Frank Ancona Honda

Happy Honda Days

Have you seen commercials on TV or online lately with Gumby, Skeletor or Jem and The Holograms and thought you’d been put in a time warp to the days when “The Facts Of Life” episodes were still new each week? Don’t worry, you aren’t stuck in a time warp, Honda has released the new ads for its annual Happy Honda Days campaign. The campaign is called “A Gift to Remember” and is aimed at helping adults and car buyers relive their childhood and associate those memories with buying a Honda.

In addition to commercials with Gumby and Skeletor, you might also see Strawberry Shortcake™, Stretch Armstrong and the Magic 8-Ball. The toys have been brought to life with stop-motion animation to look more like the toys you remember from your childhood. In fact, original toys were tracked down to be used in the commercials, and you might even recognize a voice or two in play as each character.

If you see Gumby riding around in a Honda model you want to come in and test drive, come into Frank Ancona Honda, and we can get you behind the wheel. We also have some great deals going on through the end of the year for those of you wanting to trade in your current car for something new or for those of you in the market for an additional car for your family. Check out our offers for leases or financed payments by visiting our website.

You can also see the Happy Honda Days commercials over on Honda’s YouTube channel.

How To Get The Best Trade In Value for Your Used Honda

5J6TF2H52EL000167_2

Jason Heard, general manager at Frank Ancona Honda in Olathe, recently weighed in on a popular debate among consumers about whether selling your car privately or to a dealership allows you to get the best trade in value. Here is what he had to say.

1. The cost: Will you need to spend money advertising it? Will you be spending money getting it ready to sell? i.e. detailing or servicing. Trading-in may also offer a tax advantage if you are buying a vehicle at the same time.

2. The time investment: When will people call or want to look at the car? Will your
workday be interrupted with calls from potential buyers? Will your evenings
be taken up with folks wanting to look at the car? How many dealer opinions will you want?

3. Safety: Do you want people knowing your number or your address? Coming to
your home?

According to MSN Auto, trading in is all about convenience. With a dealership there are no advertisements to place, no test drives to arrange, and no legal battles to fight if your recently-sold car breaks down. Your local car dealership will also take your car and then work to get it in like new condition and retail it for a profit.

Heard added, “If you have a nice car, you may be surprised at how much you will be given. If you sell on your own, buyers may not be willing to put the extra work in, which may result in a lower offer.”

Either route you choose make sure that you check the market, do your research and have a realistic view of your car and its value to help you make the best decision. US News suggests researching with a third-party website like KelleyBlueBook.com to get a rough estimate of how much your car is worth. Plug in as many details as possible, such as a built-in navigation system, CD player, leather upholstery and other features, since they could increase the value of your vehicle.

Frank Ancona Honda, Kansas City Honda Dealership, Releases Photos From Sponsoring The Great “Inside” Out Race

Posted by: Jason Heard, Sales Manager at Frank Ancona Honda

Thank you to all of those who came out and participated in the first Great “Inside” Out Race put on by the Johnson County Interfaith Hospitality Network, Inc. (IHN). The event, which was held at the Great Mall of the Great Plains, went off without incident, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. A small but mighty crowd had fun running a flat and fast course. Despite the head winds, this is what most runners asked for.
The IHN Great Race Committee and Board thanked those who sponsored and participated in the event by saying, “As we reflect upon yesterday’s IHN Great “Inside” Out Race and look ahead to Thanksgiving in just 17 days, the following seven words come quickly to mind: “We couldn’t have done it without you.”

“We are utilizing mobile sites right now and this is the next step to not only expanding our mobile presence, but also adding more engaging to our social media practices,” he said.

Honda Tops Industry in 2011 Initial Quality Study

Coming off a long string of challenging sales months, and still dealing with the aftereffects of this spring’s disasters in Japan, Honda finally was the recipient of some good news recently, when the automaker achieved its best results ever in the 2011 J.D. Not only was Honda the second-highest-rated brand in the entire survey, topping even all luxury brands except Lexus, but it also had seven different vehicles win their segments—more than any other automaker—and its own premium division, Acura, finished in third place overall.

    •Honda Fit—Sub-Compact Car
•Honda Civic and Honda Insight (tie)—Compact Car
    •Honda Accord—Midsize Car
    •Honda Element—Compact Crossover/SUV

Kansas City Honda Dealer Frank Ancona Honda Reviews: Consumer Reports Naming Honda Fit As The Small Car With The Best Overall Value In 2011

Posted By Jason Heard, Sales Manager at Frank Ancona Honda

We are excited to announce consumer reports’ review of the Honda Fit as the small car with the best overall value in 2011. The Fit also emerged as the best overall value among some 200 different vehicles analyzed, ranging from small cars to luxury sedans.

    According to Consumer Reports
Although the Jeep Wrangler is well known for its off-road capability, it was named as the overall worst value.
Consumer Reports mined performance, reliability, and ownership cost data to calculate value scores for some 200 different vehicles, ranging from small cars like the Honda Fit to luxury sedans such as the BMW 750Li.

Scores are calculated based on the five-year owner cost for each vehicle along with Consumer Reports’ road-test score and the publication’s own predicted reliability. Five-year owner cost estimates factor in depreciation, fuel costs, insurance premiums, interest on financing, maintenance and repairs, and sales tax. Depreciation is by far the largest owner-cost factor.

In all, eight different categories of vehicles were evaluated including small cars, family cars, upscale sedans, luxury sedans, sporty cars, wagons and minivans, small SUVs and midsized SUVs. Within categories, models were ranked by value score, above or below the average.

Where to find the best values
Small, affordable cars are often considered value choices. But some small cars are far better choices than others. At $16,000, the Honda Fit is the top value of more than 200 vehicles in Consumer Reports’ analysis; the similarly priced Chevrolet Aveo is the worst value in its class, with higher owner costs, a low test score, and below-average reliability.

Several family cars and small SUVs also stand out as good values, including the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Sonata, Subaru Forester, and several Toyotas, notably the Camry, Prius, and RAV4.

Small and family cars tend to provide the most value for the money, while luxury cars as a class are more expensive to own. But there are always exceptions. For instance, Consumer Reports’ best-value luxury car, the V-8-powered Hyundai Genesis 4.6, has a value score that is the same as the average for all cars.

Even some SUVs can be relatively good values, but midsize models tend to be more expensive over time due to worse fuel economy and higher purchase prices. Still, several models scored better than average, including the Hyundai Santa Fe, the four-cylinder Kia Sorento, and the V-6 and hybrid versions of the Toyota Highlander.

When including its Lexus and Scion brands, Toyota led in best values with 11 models. Seven best-value models come from Hyundai and its Kia brands. Five best-value models are from Honda and Acura.

Frank Ancona Honda Celebrates Its 50 Year Anniversary With Happy Honda Owners Across The U.S.

In a recent interview that we posted on a community forum, several Honda owners responded to our post: “If you are a happy Honda owner, please help us celebrate our 50th Anniversary by submitting  your best Honda story in 200 words or less. The best stories will be featured on our blog and other social networking sites.”

Here are some of the responses-

    Happy Honda Family of 7!
I drive a Honda Odyssey and my husband drives a Honda Pilot. We have 5 children and will only drive a Honda! Honda’s are known for safety, sleek looks and will hold our big happy family! My last car was an Odyssey too and before children I drove a Honda Civic. We are a Happy Honda Family! Before I had children I said I would never drive a minivan but now that I drive an Odyssey I want no other vehicle to transport my growing family! I’m glad my Odyssey seats 8 people too so we have room in case we ever have another addition to our growing family! Honda’s are comfortable too and Honda has thought of everything! I love the sunroof in my minivan! How cool is that, that I get to drive a minivan that has a sunroof!

    Successfully Yours,

    -Stacy Pursell

    When “best” isn’t always happy

I’ll readily admit I’m obsessed with my 2009 purple Honda Fit. She has an identity – clearly, a gender, too – and a name: Aubergine, which means “eggplant” in French. So I’m sure you can imagine how distraught I was to receive a 4:30 a.m. call from the local police last year, telling me I had to leave the security and stress-free shelter of my apartment. Aubergine had been “de-tired” – her alloy wheels and tires removed – and dropped onto two milk crates, one under each side between the front and back doors. The month that followed was replete with insurance headaches, repair shop ineptitudes and all the while, my husband and I were searching for our first home. No one had cautioned me about the importance of wheel locks, so I readily share this story – as well as the photos from that fateful morning, still saved on my BlackBerry – to Fit owners and others who adore their small cars. Aubergine celebrated the one-year anniversary of her de-tiring safe in her half of our two-car garage – and hopefully she’ll never been vandalized again!

2011 Honda Odyssey Receives Safest Minivan Honors

No Comments on 2011 Honda Odyssey Receives Safest Minivan Honors

Here is an article from Auto Evolution, written by Daniel Patrascu, announcing that the Honda Odyssey has recently been named the safest minivan for 2011 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and the National Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Honda Odyssey, Safest Minivan for 2011

As a testimony to the way in which Honda’s new Odyssey minivan has been designed, two of America’s most renowned safety organizations, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have both given the model their highest scores in the crash test conducted this year. The achievement, in the case of other models not surprising, comes to establish the Odyssey as the first and single minivan to have achieved top scores from both organizations this year.

Both of the organizations crash tested the Odyssey in the beginning of the year, but only now the Japanese car maker can safely say that their vehicle is the best in its class as far as the safety of the occupants go.

The new Odyssey, launched last year, is Honda’s take on a segment that, because of the competition, is growing harder and harder to control. Several important players fight for a piece of the market that stands for a whole lot more in the US than in Europe.

Honda’s Odyssey, seen by the manufacturer who produces it as one of the most successful minivans it has ever made, is trying to build on the all-American appeal by being designed and engineered in the US and assembled at the Honda Manufacturing of Alabama (HMA) plant, using mostly domestic parts.

For the new model year, Honda has tweaked the model a bit, adding little extras like a more powerful 3.5l i-VTEC V6 engine (248 hp), a new 3-mode second-row seat design or a rear entertainment system with a 16.2-inch ultrawide split-screen display.

Honda Civic GX Tops Greenest Cars List for Eighth Straight Year

No Comments on Honda Civic GX Tops Greenest Cars List for Eighth Straight Year

Here is a blog post from Forbes, written by William Pentland, about the Honda Civic GX receiving the top vote for the greenest vehicle from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy

Honda Claims Greenest Car Honors, Again

Honda’s Civic GX took the top spot in the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy’s 14th annual “green car” rankings for the eighth consecutive year.

Honda managed to secure the title amidst a rapidly expanding field of electric cars, plug-in electric hybrids, gasoline hybrids, diesels, natural gas vehicles, and the relentlessly improving “conventional” gasoline vehicles. But below the top spot, the “Greenest” list sees a shake-up: the all-electric Nissan Leaf places second, followed by the gasoline-powered Smart Fortwo. Hybrids take the next three spots, followed closely by Ford’s new Fiesta SFE and the Chevrolet Cruze Eco. Also notable on this year’s list is the Hyundai Elantra, with a 4 mile-per-gallon jump in fuel economy over the 2010 model. Rounding out the “Greenest” are the Mazda 2 and the much-touted Chevrolet Volt “extended-range EV.”

The strong showing of conventional vehicles in the top twelve is a testament to how serious manufacturers have gotten about recasting these vehicles as fuel-sippers with transmission refinements, weight savings, and sophisticated internal combustion engines.

“We’re seeing an increasing number of highly efficient gasoline options from both foreign and domestic automakers along with the first electric vehicles. Ford introduced the Fiesta this year and Chevrolet debuted the Cruze, both of which do exceedingly well in our ratings,” said ACEEE vehicle analyst Shruti Vaidyanathan.

USA Today Announces: Honda Odyssey earns top five-star safety rating

No Comments on USA Today Announces: Honda Odyssey earns top five-star safety rating

Once again, Honda comes up on top when it comes to safety ratings.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently awarded the 2011 Honda Odyssey with a five star rating from their new crash-test rating system.

Honda Odyssey earns top five-star safety rating

The 2011 Honda Odyssey received an overall rating of five stars in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s new crash-test rating system, the safety agency announced today.

The Odyssey’s overall composite score is composed of a five-star frontal, four-star rollover and a five-star rating for the combined side pole and barrier tests. The side barrier test is an area where other vehicles have shown weakness with the safety agency’s new testing format. The side pole test simulates a 20-mph side-impact crash into a 10-inch-diameter pole or tree at a 75-degree angle just behind the A-pillar on the driver’s side.

According to Honda, the four-star rollover rating is actually the highest rating a vehicle of this body type can achieve under NHTSA’s testing methodology:

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently announced the Odyssey received a top score of Good in all of its crash tests but hasn’t completed a roof-strength test that is required to earn the Top Safety Pick designation.

Out of the more than 50 models NHTSA has tested so far, only 11 have earned a five-star rating under the revamped system: Acura MDX, BMW 5 Series, Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Silverado, Chevy Traverse, GMC Acadia, GMC Sierra, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata and Volvo XC60. NHTSA still has few more models left to test for 2011.

Although, I didn’t buy my Honda at Frank Ancona, I did take it there for an oil change. I called and they were able to get my car in that afternoon, unlike some other dealerships. I pulled in and my car was taken car of quickly. They have a WONDERFUL waiting room. There is coffee, juice, snacks, children’s books/toys, and a clean environment. They also gave my Honda a quick car wash before bringing it back to me. I highly recommend this dealership!

Awesome place. They really take care of you here. They get the job done, and do it right the very first time! 5 stars all the way!

I have been going to F.A Honda’s Service dept for the past 6 months or so. I have been very pleased with the Service. David Ricketts is very professional and honest. He does not recommend unnecessary maintainence work to be done. Being a single mom and someone who doesn’t know too much about car maintenance, I’m very comfortable taking my van to that Service dept. I know they will NOT ” take me for a ride”.
