The 2015 Honda Accord Hybrid has landed on Kelley Blue Book’s 10 Best Green Cars List for the second year in a row. The Accord made it onto the list for the incredible fuel economy the vehicle boasts, beating out the Chevy Volt and Tesla, along with how well the Honda Accord holds its value.
The Honda Accord has always been designed with fuel efficiency in mind, but the 2015 models beat out all previous fuel economy standings the vehicle had. Currently the Accord Hybrid sees EPA fuel economy ratings of 50 mpg highway, 45 mpg city and 47 mpg combined.
The Accord Hybrid features two motor hybrid system, blending electric-only, hybrid and engine drive models. The official name for this system is Two-Motor Hybrid Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD). This technology that is part of the Honda EarthDreams powertrain lineup. This is the most thermally efficient engine in production currently for any car brand.
The Accord Hybrid also features highly responsive and powerful regenerative braking the improves the fuel performance. Along with regenerative braking to help improve fuel economy, the Accord Hybrid incorporates start/stop technology and the air conditioner, power steering and water pump are electrically operated.
The Accord Hybrid starts off as all electric when you first turn it on. If you stay in a city-driving speed limit, it will run on electric-only for about thirteen miles. This distance is so short because the battery doesn’t have the same energy storage as a plug-in model. After all-electric is used up, a generator kicks on to provide on-board electric propulsion.
Keeping the engine below 43 mph keeps the Accord in this hybrid mode, meaning there is no mechanical connection between the drive wheels and the engine. However, going faster than 43 turns the engine on. Going 60 mph or faster shifts the engine to gas-only.
Even without the first class fuel economy that the Accord Hybrid has been recognized for, the vehicle provides an incredible driving experience that some car reviews have called futuristic. Driving a Honda Accord Hybrid is absolutely seamless – drivers do not feel gears shift or hear that gasoline exhaust noise. This is because the i-MMD doesn’t have any belts, pulleys, drive clutch or torque converter to create such a seamless experience. Even without these nuances we are all used to, the Accord generates an impressive 141 horsepower for a hybrid.
