Honda CR-V vs. Toyota RAV4: Compare the Most Popular Compact Crossovers

image00

If you’re in the market for a compact crossover with a lot to offer, the two most popular choices are the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4. But, when it comes to making the right choice, you can’t go wrong with the CR-V. To make your decision easier, CarConnection.com compiled a Honda CR-V vs. Toyota RAV4 comparison. The CR-V comes out on top in multiple areas.

Pricing

The Honda CR-V earns its first advantage over the Toyota RAV4 when you compare prices. The 2016 Honda CR-V starts at $23,7451, while the 2016 Toyota RAV4 starts at $24,3502. As an added bonus, the CR-V will retain more of its value than the RAV4. After 36 months, the ALG Residual Value is predicted to be 57 percent, and after 60 months, it should still hold 41 percent of its value.

Fuel Economy

Not only will the CR-V save you money up front, but it’ll continue saving you money at the fuel pump with its excellent fuel economy. The 2016 Honda CR-V gets an EPA-estimated 26 mpg city/33 mpg highway/29 mpg combined3, while the RAV4 EPA-estimated rating is 24 mpg city/31 mpg highway/26 mpg combined.

Safety

If safety is a top priority, then the Honda CR-V is what you want. It scores five stars in all crash tests performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration4, while the RAV4 only gets four stars in some tests.

Interior Space

You and your passengers will love the CR-V’s spacious interior, which boasts a total of 104.1 cubic feet of space. Second row passengers fit comfortably with 38.3 inches of rear legroom and 53.1 inches of hip room.

2016 Honda CR-V Receives Top Safety Pick and Highest Overall Score for Collision Safety

image00

The 2016 Honda CR-V joins the Honda Pilot, Accord and Accord Coupe in achieving a 5-star overall vehicle safety score, the top score available in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).

In a press release from Honda, Jeff Conrad, senior vice president and general manager of the Honda Division, said, “Consumers have made the CR-V America’s best-selling SUV for good reason, and this top government safety rating just adds one more appealing and class-leading attribute. Honda is committed to offering vehicles that deliver advanced safety, fun-to-drive performance and connectivity, with top fuel economy ratings. The CR-V is that kind of vehicle.”

Earlier last year the 2016 Honda CR-V also earned a top safety pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), making it a collision safety leader and a standout choice in the SUV market. It was also named Kelley Blue Book’s best small SUV buy of 2016 and one of the 15 best family cars of 2015.

The CR-V was the first Honda vehicle to offer the Honda Sensing suite of safety and driver assisted technologies. Honda Sensing is now available for the Civic, Accord, CR-V and Pilot. The new suite of driver-assisted technologies can help you sense things you might miss while driving. The suite includes:

  • Forward Collision Warning: FCW uses a small camera mounted at the top of the front windshield to detect the presence of vehicles in front of you. If it determines that you are at risk for a collision with a detected vehicle, it activates audio and visual alerts to warn you. If you fail to act on the warnings, the Collision Mitigation Braking System kicks in.
  • Collision Mitigation Braking System: By utilizing a wave radar sensor, the CMBS can help bring your Honda to a stop when the system determines that a collision with a vehicle in front of you is unavoidable. A warning sounds and then, if necessary, brake pressure is automatically applied.
  • Lane Keeping Assist System: Helps you stay in your lane by automatically adjusting the steering wheel if you begin to leave the center of a detected lane.
  • Lane Departure Warning: Alerts you if you drift out of a detected lane without using your turn signal.

What’s new in the 2016 Honda CR-V?*

Other than improvements to the Honda Sensing suite technologies, the 2016 Honda CR-V has received other new technology features including:

  • Power Tailgate: With the press of a button, the new CR-V can automatically lower or raise the trunk tailgate for easier hands-free access.
  • One-Touch Power Moonroof: With one touch of the button, you’ll be stargazing in no time.
  • Push Button Start: Now starting your CR-V is literally as easy as pressing a button.
  • Multi-Angle Rearview Camera: Get a better view of what’s behind you with three different viewing angles: normal, top-down and wide.
  • Available Real Time All Wheel Drive: It can sense when traction is lost and automatically transfer power to the rear wheels to help you grip the road and stay on course.

The above features, combined with the improved Honda Sensing suite, make the 2016 Honda CR-V one of the safest SUVs out on the market. Stop in for a test drive today or call (855) 859-6511.

2016 Honda HR-V MPG Announced

Since the 2016 Honda HR-V was announced, snippets of details about the new crossover have been slowly released. The latest news was released last week, answering a long-questioned stat on the crossover: How many miles per gallon does the Honda HR-V get?

According to AutoGuide, the mileage for the Honda HR-V stands at:

  • 28 mpg city and 35 mpg highway with a CVT and front-wheel drive
  • 27 mpg city and 32 mpg highway with all-wheel drive
  • 25 mpg city and 34 mpg highway with six-speed manual transmission

Car enthusiasts have been waiting for these numbers to see how the Honda HR-V would rank against its two biggest competitors, the Nissan Juke and the Chevy Trax. The Trax has a very low mpg with 26 city and 34 highway front-wheel drive. The Juke is close – 28 city and 32 highway front-wheel drive – but the HR-V’s mileage cannot be beat.

Modeled after the Fit, the HR-V promises to make practical use of it’s space with what is being called by Car and Driver “magic seats” and “interior origami.” With the seats up, there is 24.3 cubic feet of cargo space. When the magical seats are down, the HR-V boasts 58.8 cubic feet of cargo space.

Under the hood, the Honda HR-V has a 1.8-liter unit with 138 horsepower and 127-lb of torque. There are three trims available – LX, EX and EX-L. Standard are power windows, mirrors and door locks; a rearview camera, Pandora radio, Bluetooth, an electronic parking brake and aluminum wheels. The higher up you go, you will see a touch screen, keyless entry, paddle shifters, push button start, heated seats, satellite radio and a navigation system with Honda Digital Traffic notifications.

Soon we will hear about the safety ratings, but it is easy to assume it will be an IIHS Top Safety Pick with a full range of airbags and Brake Assist technology.
