The minivan segment isn’t nearly as congested as it used to be thanks to the rise of crossover vehicles. In their wake, the minivans that remain tend to be more luxurious, utility-driven, and spacious for families. Safety is a major priority and automakers don’t skimp on features. When comparing the 2016 Honda Odyssey to the 2016 Toyota Sienna, the top two minivans on the market, the Odyssey comes out on top.
In terms of styling, the Honda Odyssey shines. Its rear roofline spoiler and aerodynamic design boast a look similar to a crossover that offers more interior space. On the inside, the Odyssey’s technology blows the Sienna out of the water. The Odyssey comes standard with an 8-inch display screen, while the Sienna’s standard display screen is only 6.1-inches. Honda’s minivan also offers an available built-in vacuum system, the HondaVac, making cleaning up kids’ messes easy. The Sienna can’t compete with that.
Seating is plentiful in both the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna, but the Odyssey’s seating offers much more flexibility. Aside from the base model, the Odyssey can seat up to eight people, so Honda created a second row center seat that can easily be removed to create a pass-through to the back. While this center seat is in use, it can also easily be moved forward independently from the second row. To create more shoulder room for second row passengers while the center seat is installed, the outer seats can be moved 1.5 inches to the side. No one will be complaining about tight quarters while riding in the Odyssey!
Honda scores another win when it comes to fuel efficiency. The 2016 Honda Odyssey gets an EPA-estimated mileage of 19 mpg in the city and 28 on the highway, while the Sienna gets 18 mpg in the city and 25 on the highway.
Now you can see why the 2016 Honda Odyssey is the better minivan. For more information, stop by Frank Ancona Honda or call 913-782-3636. We’ll help you find the perfect vehicle for you and your family.

Value and safety awards make up a large portion of Honda’s achievements this year.
Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com named several 2016 Honda Models with Overall Best Buy, Best Buy, Best Value Brand and Best Resale Value Awards. Several 2016 Honda models were also recognized by IIHS with the esteemed TOP SAFETY PICK rating due to their excellent safety performance and still more earned top marks with a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

According to the U.S. News website, the 2016 Best Cars for the Money awards highlight the cars, trucks, SUVs and minivans that have the best combination of value and positive reviews from professional car reviewers in 23 different automotive classes. The Hondas that were honored are as follows:

The Best Car for the Money awards were created with the consumer in mind. According to the U.S News & World Report, the Best Car for the Money award winners have the best combination of long-term value and quality. Quality is measured by the overall score the vehicle achieved in the U.S. News car rankings at the time the awards were published. According to the Honda press release, the rankings are updated monthly and compare cars on the basis of safety, reliability and a consensus of industry experts’ opinions.

The 2016 Honda Pilot and the 2016 Honda Odyssey have earned top safety pick awards. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the 2016 Honda Pilot an IIHS Top Safety Pick+. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded the 2016 Honda Odyssey a five star overall safety rating.
After completely redesigning the Honda Pilot for the 2016 model year, many of the safety features were upgraded causing the bump in the safety rating from the IIHS. In order to win a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, the vehicle needs a good or acceptable small overlap rating and good ratings in the four other tests, including moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints, along with a front crash prevention system to qualify for the advanced + rating.
During the IIHS testing, the 2016 Pilot performed well with these results from Automotive World:
- Maximum intrusion of 4 inches at the parking brake pedal.
- Well-controlled dummy movement.
- Front and side curtain airbags kept dummy in place and protected the head from contact with the car and outside objects.
- Low risk of any significant injuries in a severe crash.
The NHTSA awarded the 2016 Honda Odyssey with a five star overall safety rating, the highest safety rating available from the federal government. When testing was performed by the NHTSA, the Odyssey received five stars in the front and side crash tests and four stars in the rollover test. The 2016 Odyssey has many standard safety features that helped achieve this rating, including:
- Vehicle stability assist with traction control
- Brake assist
- Antilock brakes
- Rearview camera
In the upgraded trim levels, including the EX-L, Touring and Elite models, the Odyssey has additional standard safety features:
- Forward-collision warning
- Lane-departure warning
