Honda Civic Named 2016 North American Car of the Year

Every year, the vehicle industry competes for a unique award at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. These awards are some of the most sought after, because as the Detroit Free Press notes, unlike awards given by a single publication, they are chosen by an independent jury of automotive journalists from the United States and Canada. This year, the Honda Civic won the title of North American Car of the Year.

image01In order to win, vehicles must be new or substantially changed from previous models. According to the North American International Auto Show website, jurors examine innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar when they tally up scores for each car entered into the competition. At the time of the award, Honda car sales overall rose by 13.3 percent while the Civic itself gained 29.4 percent.

If all of this doesn’t sell you on the Honda Civic, take a look at all the other accolades the 2016 model has won:

According to the team at AutoGuide, the new Civic impressed the editors with its upscale style and its new engine. They also said that the 2016 model “breathes life back into the storied nameplate” of the Honda Civic.

All-New 2016 Civic Coupe Takes on the World’s First Crowdsourced Dream Track

What could be more fun than bowling or hitting a pinata? How about hitting a giant pinata or knocking over giant bowling pins while driving the sporty all-new 2016 Honda Civic coupe? Utilizing social media, Honda crowdsourced ideas to build a new test track, the Civic Dream Track, to showcase the handling of the 2016 Honda Civic coupe. This first of its kind course incorporated many interesting and fun ideas.

The course was driven by professional stunt driver, Matt Powers. Outside of adding a stick to hit the pinata and various cameras, the Honda Civic used in the video was not modified, which allowed the car’s natural abilities to shine through. You can view the video of the car driving the course here.

According to Car and Driver, the newly redesigned Civic coupe boasts a sporty edge, from added sculpting to its body to the way its wheels and tires fully occupy the wheel wells. But it goes beyond its appearance. The engine in the new, agile coupe gives it a performance boost over previous generations. The base model comes with 158 horsepower while the higher end models come with 174 horsepower. This is a large boost from the previous generations, which only came with horsepower in the 140s.

2016 Honda Civic Wins North American Car of the Year Award

image00

The all-new 2016 Honda Civic made its debut in November 2015 with a completely revamped look, jam-packed with new Honda technologies. Since its release, the vehicle has been winning tons of awards, including being one of Kelley Blue Book’s Overall Best Buys in its Best Buy Awards. Now, the new 2016 model has just earned the most prestigious award in the automotive industry: the 2016 North American Car of the Year Award.

The all-new 2016 Honda Civic received the award at the opening ceremony of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2016.

In a Honda press release, Jeff Conrad, Honda Division senior vice president and general manager, said, “The all-new Civic was developed and is built in North America, making this North American Car of the Year win even sweeter. Civic is a cornerstone of the Honda lineup, and we’re delighted and the automotive press has recognized the new levels of styling, performance, advanced technology, safety and value that characterize the new Civic.”

The North American Car of the Year Award is given by a group of 53 international automotive journalists and recognizes the most outstanding car of the year based on factors such as innovation, design, safety, performance, technology and more. This award is unique because it is given from automotive journalists from the United States and Canada.

The 2016 Honda Civic can also add a top safety pick from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety to its list of achievements. The new model has received the highest available safety rating as well as a top rating of GOOD in five IIHS crash test modes.

Conrad said, “As these new safety ratings demonstrate, the 2016 Civic Sedan not only brings new value to the compact segment with its hefty upgrades to fun-to-drive performance, fuel efficiency, refinement and technology, it also delivers advanced collision safety performance. With its available Honda Sensing technologies, including our first application of Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow, the new Civic Sedan offers customers a suite of technologies unlike anything else in the class.”

Screen Shot 2015-11-16 at 10.42.10 AM

The highly anticipated 2016 Honda Civic was recently released on November 12, 2015. The 10th generation Civic debuted with a revamped look jam-packed with new Honda features. We aren’t the only one’s taking notice. Kelley Blue Book recently announced the 2016 Honda Civic as the Overall Best Buy in its Best Buy Awards. The new Civic raises the bar for all compact cars with its sleek and modern design. With a larger model than years past, the civic almost feels like a midsize sedan.

What’s New with the 2016 Honda Civic?*

The redesigned Civic was created with usability in mind, making it easy to drive and use. It gets 42 mpg on the highway and 31 mpg in the city. From a capless fuel system, to a remote engine start and automatic brake holding, the 2016 Honda Civic Sedan has a full list of new features:

    • Turbocharged Engine: A new 1.5 liter engine offers high cruise efficiency and robust performance.
    • LED Lighting: The 2016 Honda Civic features new LED headlights that help you see more of the road and helps the environment by saving energy.
    • Rain-sensing Windshield Wipers: Rain moving into the area? No problem! The Civic’s new rain-sensing wipers automatically activate when it senses rain.
    • Capless Fuel System: Say goodbye to that pesky fuel cap. Now refueling is easier and cleaner with the capless fuel system. The fuel filler neck opens on contact when the door is opened, to make refueling faster, easier and cleaner.
    • Heated seats: Now everyone in the car can experience heated seats! The 2016 Civic features 3 heat level settings for the passenger seats and back seat heat capability.
    • Driver Information Interface: Everything you need to know pops up on your driver dashboard.
    • Remote Engine Start: Tired of getting into a freezing or super hot car? Now you can start your car from wherever you’re more comfortable.

And the list goes on and on. For a look at all of the new features click here. So what are you waiting for? We have the 2016 Honda Civic in stock today! Stop in for a test drive or call: (855) 859-6511

Olathe Honda Dealer Recaps 2016 Honda Civic Announcement

Honda decided to reveal details about the 2016 Honda Civic after its initial presentation during the 2015 New York Auto Show on September 16, 2015, via YouTube. The 10th generation Honda Civic has been completely redesigned for a sportier look with more power and technology behind the wheel.

Honda made news when it was the first manufacturer to offer both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay in the 2015 Honda Accord redesign. Now it has been announced that the 2016 Honda Civic will also be the second car ever to feature both technologies. In addition to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, the 2016 Civic will offer the Honda Sensing technology for safety when driving. Honda Sensing includes Collision Mitigation Braking, Road Departure Mitigation and adaptive cruise control.

Another exciting thing about the 2016 Honda Civic is the design. When it was unveiled at the New York Auto Show with a sportier, sleeker design upgrade, many critics scoffed that Honda would not maintain the edgier look. But the reveal last Wednesday shows the new Civics will look incredibly similar to the concept presented at the auto show. Digital Trends puts it best, calling the silhouette of the Civic dramatic thanks to the cabin being pushed back and the grille upgrade similar to the CR-V and Accord.

Under the hood, the 2016 Honda Civic will have two all-new 4-cylinder engine options. The first is a 2-liter base direct-injected engine and the second is a turbocharged 1.5-liter, also direct-injected. Customers will have the option of a six-speed manual transmission or the continuously variable transmission (CVT). Projections say the new Civic will get 40 mpg highway.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the sedan will be released first this fall followed by the coupe in the winter. Eventually, the United States will also see a 5-door hatchback from Europe and the Civic Type-R in 2017 for the first time. Honda has also announced that they will make an Si trim level that focuses on performance. No word yet on if there will be a hybrid option.
